Sick Sad World!

It’s been years, but my past Daria obsession is seeping out into my drawings and doodles. There’s just something about those sharp edges and thick outlines—which leaves me with a bunch of snapped Prisma tips. Maybe one day when I’m feeling brave I’ll scan and post my actual Daria drawings from high school. Serious obsession.

After spending the last few years dating a purebred nature lover, wildlife documentaries have become my go-to comfort fixes on par with alpaca socks and Fleetwood Mac. As awesome as the weirder animals are (Mike the headless chicken and Birds of Paradise, I’m talking to you), these three are my favorites. Do you know what a kit fox is? Only the coolest (wish-it-made-a-good-pet) animal out there with grebes and flying squirrels trailing closely behind.

This blog has gone out the window after moving to a new city, but I’m slowly getting back into the swing of things. That said, this Visual of the Month is of a recent project I took part in at W+K. Last week Portland hosted the IDSA International Conference and in conjunction, W+K invited all of the attendees up to the rooftop for DIY-inspired party. I got to team up with two talented badasses, Carolin Harris and Christina Piluso, to bring Portland’s DIY culture to this event. There are loads of photos from the event here and below are just a few from my favorite project, a mural filled with agency iconography and QR codes linking to the international offices. My partners in crime below as well.

This past month has been pretty unpredictable and now big changes are on the way. In just a few weeks I’ll be loading up my car, saying far too many goodbyes and beginning my move to Portland, Oregon. Leaving Austin means I’m in for some serious heartache but Portland is going to be an A++ replacement, no question about it, and I’ll be moving up there to work for one of my favorite companies of all time (woohoo!). Things I’m looking forward to: experiencing a NW summer, drinking some seriously good coffee and beer, checking out the local music scene and reuniting with some dear Seattle buddies. So excited!

And while all of the “new” is going to be a lot of fun, there’s definitely some “old” I can’t let go of. This is my unpractical, idealistic packing job.

A crate of Torchy’s Tacos, half of which are baja shrimp (and hopefully not covered in BP’s oil)

A few years ago I found myself on a sidewalk in downtown Portland downing a bacon covered bear claw late at night and thought to myself, “This town does live up to the hype.” A lot of Austinites love Portland and it’s no surprise. The two cities share a lot in common – a strong biking community, a love for the outdoors (when it isn’t 105°) and a thriving creative culture. That said, I was inspired by some of the things that make Portland great and of course the Pacific Northwest totem poles when I designed this poster. 18″ x 24″ and 3-color.

All in all, it was a totally fun project and a second version might be in order down the road. I’m thinking the next totem pole needs some characters from Chuck Palahniuk’s “Fugitives and Refugees” – a local ghost, a santa from the Santa Rampage and maybe even that 2.5 lb. hair ball that’s apparently an hour south of the city.

Alright, I’m finally coming to terms with the fact that I can’t keep up with my lofty “Visual of the Week” game plan. Instead, I’m revising these posts and going monthly with the new “Visual of the Month” in hopes of actually producing more long term, thoughtful projects. I think I just raised the bar for myself.. oye.

I’ll officially kick off my first VOTM post next week, but in the meantime here’s a quick preview of my current pet project. More to come.

In less than a week, I’ll be in full vacation mode on a beach in Belize. I can’t wait to see so many brilliant colors between snorkeling in the Barrier Reef and trekking through the Rainforest. Talk about sensory overload. Ready. to. go. NOW.

NPR briefly covered an ancient Mongolian horse race this past September. Boys under the age as 14 and some as young as 4 or 5 will race 15 miles bareback. They’re dressed in brilliant colors and sing to encourage their horses. Apparently the race hasn’t changed since the 13th century, crazy. You can check the audio clip here as well as an NPR video.

Coincidences. There’s something exciting about them, about making a significant connection between two seemingly random things. About six or seven years ago I bought an old cut and color sheet from an antique shop for no good reason. I’ve had it tacked up behind my computer ever since. Here’s the weird part – after visiting my grandparents last week, I learned our family has deep roots in Alsace-Lorraine, a small region in Eastern France. In fact, there’s still a well connected Alsatian community here in central Texas. Below is the cut and color sheet and a photograph of my great grandmother. I gave her a little Southwest flair.

I’m not much for guns or hunting, and somehow I ended up sharing my studio with a severed deer head last night. I can thank the deer processor across the street for that. I felt sorry for the little lady, so I’ve given her for a more dignified look. According to my artist license, it’s okay to add buck antlers despite her femininity.
